Medicare 2027: Key Changes Every Senior Must Know

Medicare plans and prescription coverage can change from year to year. For older adults and their families, understanding what to review—and when to ask for help—can make a real difference. In Part 1 of Senior PrimeTime Episode 8, host Bonnie Keith speaks with Medicare specialists Doris Ford and Elka Soussana about what to keep in mind as people prepare for Medicare 2027.

Doris Ford, of Ford Benefits Group, has spent more than 25 years helping people understand health insurance and Medicare. Elka Soussana, of Simpler Horizons Insurance Solutions, shares her perspective on Medicare options and advocacy for seniors. Together, they explain why it’s important to pay attention to plan notices, prescription coverage, provider networks, and annual plan reviews.

One of the central messages in this conversation is simple: don’t assume your current plan will stay exactly the same. A plan’s costs, covered medications, doctors, or provider network may change. Doris and Elka encourage beneficiaries to read the Annual Notice of Change and review their coverage each year. If a notice is confusing, they suggest seeking guidance from a qualified Medicare professional who can help explain the options.

The episode also makes a complicated topic easier to picture by comparing Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement. Elka describes Medicare Advantage like riding a bus: the plan’s network and rules help determine the route. Original Medicare with a supplement is more like driving your own car, with more flexibility to see providers who accept Medicare, along with different costs and coverage considerations. The right choice depends on a person’s needs, location, budget, and preferences.

Bonnie, Doris, and Elka also discuss Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, how medication coverage can differ between plans, and questions to ask when comparing options. Their conversation is intended to help listeners know what to review and where to start—not to offer one-size-fits-all advice. Medicare choices are personal, and individual circumstances vary.

This episode is presented by the Foundation for Senior Services, led by CEO and co-founder Joyce Robertson. The Foundation connects older adults and families with information and vetted senior services specialists. Bonnie Keith is the host and Creative Visual Director of Senior PrimeTime.
